Powerful morning practice

first india trip 150I am at my house in Tulum, Mexico right now. This week I decided to re-visit a morning practice I used to do and I felt such absolute clarity and excitement afterwards that I decided to write about it. The powerful pose is Butter fly pose ~ Baddha Konasana in Sanskrit.

To experience the full benefits of this pose on multiple levels, come into it Yin style, which means for 3-5 minutes.  Five minutes will really allow you to feel all this pose has to offer but you can gradually work up to it if you like.  Set a timer for the time you choose to spend in the pose.  Come to the floor to seated and bring the soles of your feet together and rather than have your feet close to you, gently slide them away so you have a larger diamond shape between your legs, knees wide and fold your torso forward, soften your whole upper body, head, facial muscles, neck, shoulders and allow your body to drape towards your feet.

If you have sciatica elevate your hips on a cushion or block.  If you are unable to round your spine due to issues there or have suffered whiplash or neck injury then it’s best to skip this pose for now, however I would full heartedly endorse practicing it in your mind every day for five minutes and soon you will physically be practicing the pose.

The most amazing benefit of this pose in my view is the deep stimulation to your central nervous system which brings the most amazing clarity of mind, especially when held for 5 minutes.

Note that once you settle into this pose and soften, you will most likely feel a variety of sensations throughout your spine, often it is tingles, warmth, tight spinal nerves loosening. Continue to breathe deeply through all that you feel. If you feel any sharp sensations or receive the message from your body to come out of the pose, then listen to your body.  In addition, you can place a block or pillow between your forehead and the floor for a time to ease the spinal sensations while you adjust. Enjoy!
