Meditation Made Easy
Many of us hear about the benefits of daily meditation yet every time we try it, it seems to elude us.
I can tell you from 25 years experience with daily meditation. This practice IS worth pursuing. However baby steps are how to succeed.
Before I continue with the best steps to take to succeed and love meditating, I want to share why meditation has become the absolutely most invaluable part of my day.
- It supports me to show up as my best self
- It allows frenetic thoughts to settle so I am clear
- I receive fabulous ideas throughout the day
- I sleep really well
- I can do my job and be of service much better
- My stress levels stay pretty low
- I receive direction about my path in life
- I can make choices easily because the path feels clear
- I connect with the divine and receive guidance & support
- I no longer feel lost
- Sitting (mediation) sets up my day on the right foot
- I am a much better listener
- I am way less reactionary that I used to be
- I go with the flow much more easily
- My tolerance for drama is almost zero – YAY!!!
- I refuse to argue with anyone (used to love it)
- I choose peace now, I choose calm, I choose love
- I love who I am more than I ever have before
- I make choices that are beneficial for me
In a nutshell, what I experienced over time after sitting daily was an understanding that I am connected to an invisible energy that moves through me and is so much bigger than me. It is pure love. When I sit still for about 10 minutes, I start to feel this love energy swirl in my heart. I drop into more stillness and at that point, I could sit there ALL DAY…because it feels so good.
What I just described could take time. It took time for me but that doesn’t mean it will for everyone. Give it time, trust the process and above all else, COMMIT. Do not say “I will meditate tomorrow”. When you do something daily, you are wiring your brain into a healthy habit that is very good for you and this takes time.
If one day, you don’t have as much time as you’d like, still meditate, even if just for 5 minutes, so you can maintain building more awareness within. This is an important choice to continue to make.
A life with daily mediation brings us into alignment with who we are and why we are here. And that…just feels good.
My tips to make mediation easy:
- Designate a spot in your home for meditating
- Ideally, create a alter – small table or even a box with items that have meaning to you
- For sitting ideally use a bolster, zafu or kneeling bench
- Meditate right away after waking – ideally, brush teeth, get a water or tea and go sit
- Avoid checking messages or emails till after you sit
- Find your seat, relax your shoulders
- Set a timer for 2 minutes
- Close your eyes if comfortable
- Relax your stomach and breathe through your nose
- Focus on feeling your lower abdomen relax in & out as you breath
- Commit to not moving till the timer goes off
- If 2 mins felt easy, add another 1-2 minutes
- Decide on how many minutes feels doable for you & repeat daily for one week
- On week 2 increase your sit time by 2 minutes
- Each week add 2 minutes until you reach 15-20 minutes
- 15-20 minutes daily is ideal and enough to receive wonderful benefits
- Take one day off a week if that feels good
- Commit and never give up
