Shifting Our Mood
Today I want to share a little about shifting our mood and a very effective way to do it.
Last night in my Yin yoga class I was teaching a set to stimulate the liver and gallbladder meridians. All organs have emotional expressions and the emotional flavour of liver/gallbladder is anger, from the slightest annoyance to all out rage and everything in-between. All emotions have a vibration to them and anger is pretty low. When we feel angry or annoyed we are not feeling too happy and it can seem impossible to reach the feeling of happiness when such a heavy emotion is dominating our experience. We all experience anger in our lives, I am not suggesting we not feel this emotion, however shifting out of it as soon as we can is vital for our well-being, as heavy unresolved emotions left in the body for prolonged amounts of time will cause dis-ease at some point.
I am going to explain here a very simple practice that will shift your emotional well-being, if you commit to working at it. When you are feeling annoyed, irritated, angry from a situation in your life, one of the best things you can do first is to go outside for 5-15 minutes and list a few things in your head that you immediately see that you like or appreciate. So it could sound something like this: “I really like that tree it’s so pretty, I love when the clouds make cool formations, those purple flowers are really nice looking, what a nice car”. This going outside practice is very easy and simple do to and when you think about something you are happy about even for just a few minutes, you begin to dilute the heavy emotion you are feeling. If you cannot go outside then you can find a list of things inside or wherever you are and that could sound like this: “I really like the colours in my living room rug, that’s such a great rug, I’m glad I bought that when I was travelling, my apartment is so bright especially when the sun is shining and I love the light in here”.
Gratitude and appreciation are high vibrational feelings. I have found the best way to shift my mood when I am feeling attached or down about some situation in my life is to take a little mental break and make a list of things around me that I do like, that I am happy about. This practice can be done any time of day, even when you are feeling really great and that’s the thing, when you do this practice just for the fun of it, all the time, you will begin to feel so much more happier than you may ever have imagined. You can also list things about yourself, your personal life or anything else that you like and have appreciation for.
Here is one quote that sums this all up: “time doesn’t change anything, doing something different does”.
